Please forgive me for trying to understand - so I don't really need any new parts (ie large nut) other than the axle assembly itself? Follow bay13's procedure until axle is hanging downward (not supported on the outer end). This brings us to your post, the axle won't usually just pull out of the transmission. If all this is true, I assume I am not prying right at the transmission, but between the transmission case and what part of the axle? (is there an inboard joint inside the boot where the axle enters the transmission?). I can't envision how I can pry against the side of a round axle. Thanks for your patience. Don
