When the timing belt goes there is not always a noise. He said the car was running rough before it happened. If the belt first slipped, the timing would be off a bit and would run rough.
I hope it's the fuel pump and not the timing belt. If it was the timing belt he's going to need a new engine. The 5 cylinder engine is an interferance engine (the valves and pistons occupy the same area at different times. The timing belt keeps them apart). The pistons hit the valve while they are open bending them. That will require a rebuilt head at the least. With the value of the car what it is, a another car may be cheaper.
1993 was the first year of this design in the US. They change the belt design in 1994 because of the failure rate they experienced.
Too many people ignore the timing belt maintenance as it's about $500, but it's cheaper than the alternative.
