Cam Shaft Alignment / Timing Adjustment & Tweaking (not for the faint of heart) 850 1995

Essentially - you are correct about the process I encountered... It turned what I feared to be a negative (which it really did not matter that much) into a positive - which was indeed interesting and liberating.

I am not sure why the sprockets are slotted - I can only suppose that some "play" would be necessary, but the slots can accomodate several degrees.

As far as emissions - I do live in CA, and Mark warned me that although mpg should not be affected, emissions could... so next time I go to get the test done, I am going to bring along my 10mm tools to go back to center if need be.

Lastly - I too would appreciate a "survey" from anyone else as to their sprocket positions. All you would have to do is back out a single bolt far enough to view the slot, and see if the bolt is centered in that slot... pics would be helpful.

Cheers
