I'm with you on the Passat--I have a 96 GLX V6 wagon that has been nothing but trouble--from the transmission to the driver's side door handle (and everything in between). I'll never buy another VW.

I'd put my 90 Acura Legend L up there as the most reliable and enjoyable ride I've owned.

As someone who is not particularly experienced as a do-it-yourself mechanic, I find the Volvo 240 (I have an 86 240DL with under 100k on the odometer) to be relatively easy to work on.
