Bill--How nice to hear that a shot in the dark sometimes strikes the bull's eye. I would be curious to know how the clip holding the hose became damaged so that it blew off. Jiffy Lube, when they messed up mine, I wrapped copper wire around it so it wouldn't spring loose until I got a new clip from Volvo. What happened to yours? I hope you used Mobil 1 ATF to refill your transmission. Change it out every two years by flushing with twelve (12) quarts of new. Now that you know where the hose is, two years from now release the hose, go down to Home Depot or Lowe's, buy three feet of half-inch inside diameter clear (clear) plastic hose, and slip it on the male end of the hose. The fluid comes out the hose, not the radiator. Mark a one-gallon milk jug at the two-quart level, shove the hose inside, have your wife hold the jug on top of the battery, and then get in the car and start the engine. You can easily see the jug under the hood when it's raised, and when the level hits the two-quart mark, shut the engine off. Take two quarts of Mobil 1 ATF and pour it down the tranny dipstick tube. This means buying a funnel with a long slender snout from Wal-Mart that will reach down where that rotten dipstick is, buried under all the hose connections. You may even have to buy a piece of 3/8ths tubing to tape to the end of the funnel to make it reach. After emptying in two quarts, start the engine and pump out two more.
When you're sitting in the seat eye balling the milk jug your wife is holding, put your foot on the brake and shift from park to reverse to drive to all the other gears as the fluid is being pumped out. Your tranny has compartments in it that hold beaucoup quarts of the fluid, and leaving it in park while you recycle twelve quarts of ATF through it does not really flush the transmission properly. Each time you pump out two quarts, run the gear shift lever back and forth. After the fourth quart you should notice how much easier the transmission transitions through the different gears. Old and dirty ATF will make the transmission jerk slightly as you shift from one gear to another. New ATF will make it shift much much smoother. To keep from ruining the hold-on clip the next time you change the tranny oil, get a reverse pliers and spread the clip and pull on the hose at the same time, keeping the foul language to a minimum so you won't shock your wife, and it will come loose. Twelve quarts of Mobil 1 ATF will cost you about $70. If Jiffy Lube does it for you or some other quickie lube shop, it will cost you double that. Buy thirteen quarts and flush through twelve so you have one in reserve to top up if you're not accurate or worrying whether you pumped out too much. Dicki
