Can't tell you on the paint, but the 96 fob has the lock/unlock buttons side by side. The 97's have the lock/unlock buttons one above the other. Additionally, when you lock a 97 the parking or turn signal lights front and back will flash. They will not on a 96. And no, you can't change out a relay to make the 96 flash its lights when you lock it. Dick
