By my calculations if you have a normally aspirated car with 15 inch wheels you would do about 3000 rpm at 80. With the turbo and 16 inch wheels you would be at about 2700. This assumes a final drive ratio of 2.74 for the NA and 2.54 for the turbo (numbers from Volvo website) and also that they include the overdrive ratio in those numbers. It also assumes 60 aspect ratio tires. I have a NA with 15 inch wheels and do about 3000 rpm at 76-78 mph. My gearbox operates normally with lockup and no slip I am aware of.
I think until the pnp switch fails altogether and the gearbox goes into safe mode (always in 3rd no matter what and check engine goes on) it would not be suspect. The pnp problems seem to start by occurring mostly when first engaging the gears, not in steady running. Then they get worse gradually.
