If I were a betting man I'd wager it was the timing belt tensioner.

Don't mess with an interference engine. Find another mechanic with experience with Volvo's 5 and 6-cylinder inline engines ("white engines" because they aren't painted red). Don't drive the car until the fault is found and repaired.
