Avoid the '93...to many revisions in '94 and up and parts are harder to find for it. You ask a very open ended question. Is it any good?...well, yeah, but I would look for a car with less miles to begin with (and avoid '93 like I said). I looked for over a year for my S70T5 and my stipulations were that it costs less than $10,000 and had less than 100,000 miles on it and was kept up. Still I've put over $1000 in it over the first 4 months I've owned it...mostly in suspension upgrade and little things. These cars are addictive and fun to drive but expect on-going repairs and expenses, especially if the car has many miles. Do you know a good independent mechanic that knows Volvo's really well? If not, can you do the work? Do you have the time and $$ ? If no to these questions and you plan to take your 850 to the dealer, you will get raped, and if I were you I would plan to buy another car. No offense, but it's the truth.
Possible expenses:
A/C Evaporator $1000-1200
Suspension work: $1000 easily
Rear-main seal: Another $1000
Lots of little mechanical things and irritants...never ending: Nickle and Dime you to death.
Just read the boards here and you'll get a good idea.
If you still want an 850, then go for it. These boards are here to support you and are invaluable to a Volvo owner.
