Sit in the front passeneger seat. Pull down the large black close out panel above your knees and lower legs. Now strech your legs out forward. The FI relay is adjacent to your right foot. It's a white box. I've always seen them with a date stamped in the side in black ink. like "08.04.93"

thanks...I found it. The swap made no difference, but the old one-made in Germany, was not totally plugged in...sort of cocked, and sideways, which I think is normal. I put new unit in, car still doesn't run, even after replacing 25 amp blade fuse, which assembly looked very good, just blown, and the german style fuses on left kick panel looked ok but some were replaced anyway. The gas tank was almost empty when I got it I added 6 gal plus gas deicer. Now the battery is almost dead.

Hi John, So the 25 amp fuse was blown? Don't hear of that very often. It carries the current for everything in the FI system. Pumps are the biggest draw - maybe 12-14 amps. But the only thing I've known to blow that fuse is the O2 sensor heater -- where the wire insulation got burnt or worn off, making a dead short to ground. Can't quite see that on an '87, with the sensor in the manifold, but...

Are you sure you have spark at all plugs? An ignition primary failure will trump the FI system. No spark-no fuel.

The fuse 6 to 4 jumper Bob refers to will bypass much of the FI front end, 25 amp fuse and Fuel relay basically. A Jumper between the LEFT (input) fuse contacts will apply voltage just like the Fuel relay does. The pumps will run immediately, so try starting.

If the ignition is OK, it should start -- meaning the fuse jumper bypassed a failing point in the fuel system. Let us know what happens and we'll go from there.

You will need to have a strong battery. I bought a low-level "no fancies" battery charger 10 - 15 years ago, and it's been a useful tool. An overnight charge @ 2amps usually gets the battery back up.

The holder for the 25amp fuse can get brittle and cracked and full of corrosion, and still look good. It may be worth your while to find the way to open it up (the top part sort of pivots backwards) and look inside.

The German-style fuses have a way of getting oxide on the ends - invisibly. With a forefinger you can spin each fuse, rotating it as if it had an axle between the fuse holders. That will remove the oxide. I have found that it can solve strange problems.

Have you tried the jumper between fuse #4 and #6? That will power the pumps or else reveal other problem location.

Good Luck,

Bob
