760 and the downside of IRS, the CV joints 700 1988

As I was pulling into my driveway today, I noticed that during hard left turns, I hear a rumble coming from the right rear quarter of my 760. Godd*mn CV joints...

Now, here's my question for all of you experts out there: What's my path of least resistance? Instead of taking the axle out and replacing broken bits, should I just toss the whole right side CV axle and just stick a new one in there? I can't seem to be able to find prices for them online, what should I expect to pay (aftermarket / Volvo)?

Hello all,

I agree with the fact that the rear CV joints and boots in the IRS 760 are very durable. I have a 1988 760 Turbo sedan with both original half-shafts and just now had to replace an outer boot (17 years old with 280k miles). I have never had a lick of trouble with these (or really, anything else on that car for that matter). By the way, that car is for sale on ipd classifieds if anyone is interested...

Hello:

Those joints really are durable-- I doubt that they are the problem. If they were, I'd replace them with a half shaft from the junkyard.

My vote is on a bad rear wheel bearing-- a much more common failure and consistent with your description of the symptoms...

Good luck!

Sounds more like a Bearing if its rumbling, check your wheel bearing before you go replacing CV joints

Wouldn't a bearing rumble all the way, not just during steep turns? Thanks for the suggestion!

Turns make a bearing noise much louder. Rear CV joints aren't affected by turning, just up and down motion. Our 1988 760T has original rear axles and CV joints. The boots are good and the CV joints have never been serviced to the best of my knowledge.
