All instrument cluster lights on when driving? 700 1992

Was driving home last night and all the instrument cluster lights came on. All seems fine but it worries me that there may be problems soon. Please advise. Thanks in advance. Chris

If you mean all idiot lights came on, then you are not charging. Belt Broken, Alternator Brushes worn, Disconnected Wiring, or Dead Alternator.

It's probably either the ground wire coming from the alternator (short blue wire), or the small red wire with the spade connector on the backside of the alternator. My 87 760T did the same thing - all lights came on - when the red wire went bad. I first tried to just splice in a new wire - I traced it back to the grey connector by the firewall, cut the old wire, removed and re-used the small bullet-type plug that goes into the grey connector, and ran the new wire to the alternator spade. It worked, but I ended up changing the entire wiring harness on the car a few weeks later, so I can't tell you how permanent the fix would had been.

Chris:

Do you really mean all the warning lights? For my 700 the owner’s manual says the system is designed so that when the alternator isn’t charging--the battery warning light, parking brake, brake failure and bulb failure all illuminate. In any case, you might read the FAQ for how to work on the charging system.

Best of Luck,

PVC

I had that happen in my 90 740 16 Valve and it turned out that the ground wire from my alternator was worn away and broke when I lightly touched it with my fingers. So probably an electrical/ground problem.

Could have a short developing in the ignition switch?
