charcoal cannister 200

hey does anyone know about 80s charcoal cannister hoses? my manuals say theres a hose coming from the fill tube on the gas tank then to a valve near the differential and then to cannister under the front fender , but i have a hose (not the one to fuel pump/fuel return line) coming off the top of the gas tank connected to an s shaped metal piece , this s shaped piece was just hanging there and theres a broken hose on the top of the gas tank and a broken hose going to front of car (bundled with other fuel lines) the filler tube hose is ok, so my car has 2 ????? hoses coming from the tank , i'm baffled!!!!!! the manual says 2 hoses go to the throttle from the cannister and only 1 from the gas tank WHAT IS UP WITH THIS, the dealer doesn't even know!!!!

    Hi Nigel,

Late 70's and early 80's 240s sported several evap configurations as emissions control got redone every year then. The mystery line on the tank bung is usually the vent for the accumulator; the evap line is connected in at the filler neck with an s-shaped line inside the trunk with a one-way vapor valve.

If you give us a clue what year your car was made, one of us with the books can get more specific. What year? What manual? And so we can stay away, what dealer?

i have an 87 wagon....ok i'm inside the back of the car looking down onto the gas tank bung as you call it i see the fuel pump one with a clamp , another one with a clamp , i assume its the fuel return, those are ok, then to the left of those (all three are on the cap that twists on to the gas tank) theres an elbow coming out with an inch of broken hose on it, no clamp.

my main fuel pump is right next to the rather large fuel filter close to the left back wheel, i was under the impression that the filter serves as an accumulator/the pump has a check valve ??

i just plugged up throttle connections and taped up the broken hose under the car till i get this cleared up. theres acually 4 connections on the cannister but one is capped off; maybe thats it. there is no connection on the bottom of the cannister

        Hi Nigel,

The evap system piping is much simpler by '87.

First, the pipe coming from the tank bung with an inch of broken hose is just capped - that used to be for the accumulator vent on earlier models with k-jet fuel injection. The cap falls apart, then you smell fumes.

The filter connects to the main pump with a short plastic hose, something you want to be careful about, but the check valve you mention is between that hose and the pump's output, screwed into the pump. When that fails, and it does by rust, warm starts are hard.

Hey, I'm sorry I asked about the dealer. I happen to like those folks at Boston Village Volvo, or at least they have been very helpful in the not so lucrative business of supporting my old car hobby.

The canister input goes to the filler neck. My book shows a rollover valve, but I've not laid eyes on the real one yet in a car as late as yours. Take a look at page 9 and 10 for general drawings, and 14 for specific connections, in the manual pages below. Take care dialup users, these are around a meg a piece.

        emission10
        emission11

thanks , i like the guys at boston volvo too, they just had the same diagrams that my books have....anyway i just put a vacuum plug on the tank nipple today, i was worried about the gas expanding in the tank etc, but the other hose should take care of that i think?? and its getting cold out so i'm not worried about it till spring time, thanks for other info
