Ok- so I've been driving people nuts all over the place looking for these parts...
My particular 142 is fairly early, I guess.
I'm striking out completely with everyone- trying to find the centerlink ends.
I've tried all the ussual places, almost all of the specialty places I can think of, and am getting kinda depressed and desperate.
And this is just the centerlink- Tie rods will be double the money and who know what success rate...
If I get really desperate, could I change out the idler arm and steering arm from a later - say '70 to '75 140?
Somebody else must have run into this problem before...

Joe - If I remember correctly, you still needed the right hand tie rod assembly, yes? If so, there's one on eBay as we speak, check out item number 8014426954. Giveaway price (currently under $20 with shipping), and nothing less than Volvo OEM!

Part number 678929 should be the entire center link, including the ends. I sourced mine through my dealer a couple years ago, got the center link and both tie rods w/ends. They go through a large aftermarket warehouse up in Portland, can't remember what my brand was, but they show still available. Luckily, I still have my log-in for thier website =) I don't know who to direct you to directly, though. If needed, I could get it for you, if you want to go that route.

Hey Joe,
I had mentioned the 144 that is up here... I expect that I could make arrangements to take the whole car if you wanted it. In looking back, I think it's a '71, so it would have the later type front end. You could swap the whole thing. I sorta had my eye on the idler arm, but I don't really need it. I'm sure the property owners would love to just have the car gone. I don't know why it was parked in the first place, but I bet a few hours of work on it, it could be a driver. It's only been sitting for 6-10 years or so... If interested, drop me an email and I'll get in touch with the owners. It's even possible that a title could be scared up...

Matt:
Somehow I had spaced that you mentioned a 144.
Man, there is no way I could get another car in here with the present alignment of things and vehicles.
This 142, as you remember, is pretty cherry- there are a few odd bits that I need here and there, but this stupid issue with the tie-rods has been the real stumbling block. "New" car taken out of the game by a couple of $5 parts.
I've also got that issue with the truck title- a texas lein in the amount of $0- yea, zero dollars.
I'm getting nibbled to death by ducks here.
When I get this BS resolved, I'll definately come up the mountain and have a look, but, at the moment another car would just complicate things.
Btw- to make it worse- you know how I was more looking for a chevy when I got the ford? I found a chevy that would do just fine- priced at $200- and I haven't got the room and I can't get rid of the ford until I can get the title..

If you are really stuck, you can adapt some '60's Valiant parts to fit, they have the same SAE taper. Personally, I'd ditch the lot & get a later model front end to overhaul.
|
|
|
This is my kind of approach- finding something that'll fit.
With these centerlink ends, I figured there had to be some easy answer- like that it's the same as a plymouth part. I've got to find my Hollander Interchange and see if it covers 140 series... I've got a ton of info and resources for the other cars in the fleet, but this issue just happened to catch my flat-footed.
As the car is my daily driver, and the wife is driving the only other running car,
I've been running around in circles on this.
When I get the car up and running I can chase around setting up spare parts resources. Prolly will set up to adapt to a later series front end- or at least the steering and idler arms.
|
|
|
Just to clarify on Plymouth parts, they aren't identical, the taper is the same, but I don't know about the thread that screws in to the link itself, you might have to make something for the tie rod ends to fit. At the wheels you can use the entire tie rod assembly & adjust it to be the same length as the one piece Volvo part.
Your best bet is still to get a later model front end because so much is different. Besides steering parts, the uprights are different, the upper A-arms are different(larger top ball joint) & the lower A-arms are different(bigger bushes). I don't know if there is any difference in the cross member. On the '68 I once owned I dropped the entire front end out & dumped the lot.

I'd order 675295, 675296,
as for your centre link ends that's a bit more difficult.. there are different kinds..
Hopefully yours has threads on the inside of the rod.. ie the end threads into the rod and NOT on the rod.. if that's the case you want to order 677111 and 677112.
I'd suggest ordering a parts book for your year of vehicle as well.
You can probably do a conversion, but I haven't tried it yet.. so can't tell ya.
I'm sure Veteranprodukter has parts aswell
Cheers,
Andrew

I guess I had a hard time with the idea of going out of the US for parts.
I had hoped I'd be able to find them in my city (Denver).
Also, I don't read Dutch.
I was also having a hard time finding all of the part numbers involved- I went through regular auto parts stores, 2 volvo dealers and finally got the numbers from Shane at IPD.
I think I ran into a bit of a learning curve on early 142's.
Somehow I thought the 140 series didn't have that many revisions- I mean they have the same rim sizes and a bunch of other stuff that doesn't change...

I have a 68 and a 71 and had a 72.. and I'm always running into curious little differences here and there.
PS

Did you not see my reply to your earlier post? This guy has the left side tie rod assemblies and left centerlink ends. Go to his eBay store, then search for "Volvo".

Missed it.
just looked.
This could solve my problem nicely. Many thanks.
What is the 3-digit part numnber referenced in the eBay ad? 233? Which system is that from?
Camera flash makes it hard to determine who the manufacturer of the part is- that makes me a little nervous- but, at this point there is a strong need....

Joe,
Just remembered something... if you haven't already, you might give All European Auto Supply a call. Their toll free number is 800-255-3876. Also, although their online catalog isn't much, but they do have a request for quote form. They seem to stock a lot of parts, and have access (via Scan-Tech Sweden and other european suppliers) to even more. These guys used to race 140's, and seem to be pretty knowledgeable when it comes to old Volvo's.

Joe,
I assumed the "233" was the aftermarket manufacturer's part number, probably with little or no relationship to the Volvo part number.
