Hi Patch,
I had a bit of trouble with the wiper linkage on the 88 760 that I had. Last year (around this time; snow and rain and all) the plastic bushing where the linkage connects to the motor popped off of the ball on the motor arm. I removed the plastic cowl, reinstalled it, and all was well for a week or two. Then, it did it again and was too loose to stay on. Volvo only sells the entire transmission (motor and all), not the arm or bushing. I replaced the entire thing with a used one. It worked well for a week or so, then the cable popped off of the driver's pulley (just as has happened to your's.) Here's what to do. Reinstall the cable around the pulley. Once reinstalled, you may need to adjust the tension (it was likely too loose before, hence why it came off). There is a small (8mm I believe) nut on the end of the drivers linkage. Hold the stud with a straight blade screwdriver and tighten the nut untin the drivers arm will not wobble around (it should feel taught against the pulley, as if you are trying to lift the linkage up and down). Check the passenger side as well while you're in there. Providing nothing broke, that should be all you need to do. If you do need to find a used one, you will need one from an '88-'90 760 (740 will not work) or any year 960 or S90 (pretty much all RWD models with the hood that meets the windshield and no separate metal cowl). Anyway, sorry for the long post, but I hope this helps.
Let me know if you need anything else,
