Windshield wiper cable came off! 700

The cable that wraps around the plastic cam that operates the drivers side wiper on my 1989 760T came loose.
I've searched the Turbobricks board and discovered from some posters that this may be one of the most frustrating repair jobs to undertake. Nothing is mentioned here on the Brickboard FAQ.
I'm not sure how to even start as the cable seems entirely too long and I don't know if it's stretched or if there is an adjustment.
My Chiltons doesn't have any illustrations.
Is this fixable or should I consider trying to find the whole assembly in a bone yard? Also, anybody know what models will be the same?
Any help appreciated.
