Alright, many of yow know that I've been seriously considering a 240 or 740 wagon or sedan for myself.
Recently since I've moved out west nearer to the mountains, I've taken up more outdor activities, and have realized that a nice little wagon would suit my needs more than a sedan would. I've checked over a few 740's so far, and all of them have turned out to be total trash...not worth a second look.
Is there something I don't know abot 240 wagons that makes them so hard to find? I'm willing on spending a good $4000 CAD (I think that's a reasonable amount),on a nice later 80's-early 90's models, but all I find is junk that someone had let their irresponsible son/daugter drive into the ground/use as a junk hauler.
I've decided that even tho the 700 series is a bit mroe superior to the 240 in terms of some of their designs...I'd rather go for the plain-jane 240 series over the 740 series.
Am I missing something here????

Sounds like you are near the Cdn Rockies? If so, buying a US-sourced car on eBay will be risky, as you'll have to travel a long way to pick it up, and then there are some hassles both exporting it out of the US (they want your certificate of title fax'd to the border crossing 72 hrs before you and the car arrive with the original doc's) and importing into Canada. Biggest potential hazard is that the car is not as described and you don't want it but you are a long way from home and out a bunch of cash. OK, this is all pretty obvious stuff...but the rule with used cars is "try before you buy". Break that rule at considerable risk.
I saw a nice-looking 89 wagon on the street here in Calgary with a For Sale sign in the window, and 270k km, phoned the number and met the owner for a test drive. The clutch was so bad I couldn't get it into 1st gear with the amount of force I was willing to use on the lever (M47...not known for durability), so passed on the drive and on the car - too many signs of neglect. I don't need any more projects!
The body and interior were good, no rust worth mentioning, glass all good, etc. Engine idled a little roughly, but no bad noises. She said the Volvo dealer told them it needed a new lower control arm on one side. If true - and not just worn bushings - it must have been run into a curb. She was asking $4000Cdn. I ran into her husband a month later and they eventually got $2500 for it. A good shade-tree mechanic and maybe $1000 and it might be a great car again. They ARE out there - but anything in really nice shape is either going for big numbers or simply 'not for sale'.
I have my eye on a truly beautiful 93 240 Classic wagon - the genuine thing, with one owner, but I'm going to have to outlive him, and then bid big at the estate sale.

I think that just like with finding my perfest (for me) e30 3 series BMW, I should get ready to wait till the perfect on ecomes rolling along. Sure it may be a while, but with support like you guys, it makes waitin gthat much easier:)

Some might think that the answer is that they're no good. Actually, they're so terrific that people are reluctant to give them up at any age unless they're hopeless -- thus, the plethora of junk on the market.
Speaking as a former wagon owner (who only let go of it when it was so badly rusted out -- it was an '80 in New England -- that it was really ridiculous to keep.

tell me about it. i had an 87 wagon with 315k. rusted out along the rockers and the bumper fell off :-/
i only took if off the road because it needed new tie rods and tie rod ends, and that repair would've cost more than the car was worth.
so i got an 87 sedan to replace it ;)
after sitting a few months in my yard, i started my wagon up and the engine fired right up. didn't miss a beat. (of course had to jump it, dead battery).
i loved that car.

Hi Stan.
I couldn't help but find your post. We are the owners of three Volvo wagons and there are currently five in the stable. Two were specifically sourced as refurbishing candidates for fellow enthusiasts. Drop me a line at dpsam@sbcglobal.net, we can chat if you like.

Kane is right that people who have good ones and take care of them are the ones that hang on to them. But even so, if you keep looking, you will find a good one eventually. The trick is to watch all the places where people can advertise daily and get their first. The good one at a reasonable price doesn't wait a few days for you to catch up with it.
In my area, 740 wagons in good condition (but miles around 200K) come up pretty often. I recently bought another one for US$1600, but 240s seem to always be considerably rustier at best.

Keep a watch on ebay. I've seen some very nice wagons there.

Why is it hard? It's because those who have a good one hang onto 'em - that's why!
Good ones will come sooner or later ... just be patient.
