can't keep it started 700 1989

just had the fuel pumps and relays replaced in my '89 740 GLE. The mechanic said everything was okay but I could hardly make it home. The car kept dying, getting progressively worse after each start. I supposs I could have it towed back to the mechanic but after paying him $1100 for work he said would fix the problem I don't have much faith in him.
In any case, if anyone has suggestions or could lead me in the right direction I would more than appreciate it
I don't know if it's related or not but there is a humming sound coming from inside the engine area.
Thanks so much for any help !

This may be a long shot but my 760 started running very poorly and
then died because the battery failed due to a bad alternator.
The initial symptoms were like running out of gas or
a plugged fuel filter, but it was the alternator.

Exactly what did he do for $1100? I would be irate...

Try the fuel pump regulator ( FPR ) or the Air Mass Meter ( AMM ) see the FAQ sections for more details.

Merry Christmas !

Thanks so much for the responses
In looking over the receipt I see that along with the pumps and a couple of relays the distributer was replaced. The $1100 still seems excessive to me. I was and still am irate
As soon as I can I'll check the FPR and AMM. I'll keep you posted
Thanks very much again for the help !
