can't keep it started 700 1989

just had the fuel pumps and relays replaced in my '89 740 GLE. The mechanic said everything was okay but I could hardly make it home. The car kept dying, getting progressively worse after each start. I supposs I could have it towed back to the mechanic but after paying him $1100 for work he said would fix the problem I don't have much faith in him.
In any case, if anyone has suggestions or could lead me in the right direction I would more than appreciate it
I don't know if it's related or not but there is a humming sound coming from inside the engine area.
Thanks so much for any help !
