Transmission compatable 83 244 and 87 245? 200

Hi guys,
The trans blew in my trusty 83 244. It was an automatic with overdrive. Since I have a garage and a parts car that is an 87 245 Wagon automatic overdrive that works fine, I am thinking about swapping the transmission. I plan to junk the wagon, as the rust has eaten huge holes in it. I plan to pull the whole engine/trans out of it in one piece, as I am planning to take all usable parts off the car and then have it taken to the boneyard.

However, what do the members of the board think about installing a trans without taking out the engine on the 83? Think I should just pull the whole engine/trans assembly out of it as well? Can I be sure that these transmissions are compatable?

Thanks in advance,

Jeremy

I would not pull the engine and transmission to replace the transmission, but you will need a very long extension to get to the top bolts on the bellhousing.

If the motor mounts are in good shape you can let the rear of the transmission down on a jack to make it easier to access the top bolts.

Great, because I replaced the motor mounts about a year ago, so they should be ok.

If I do it the way you recommend, do you think that putting it on 4 jackstands will get it high enough?

Thanks again for your help!

That is what I have always used. I do have one of Harbor Freights transmission jacks. Not a high quality piece of equipment but certainly better than rigging a floor jack for the job.

With jack stands there is not enough room to leave the transmission on the transmission jack and wheel it under the car. I solve that problem by getting the transmission and the jack into the tunnel area under the car and then putting the transmission on the jack.

Ok, I was planning to order a batch of China tools from Harbor freight soon anyway. I was just checking out a jack at:

Probably worth the small investment. What do you think?

I've never used one of those so I can't give you input on that. The one I purchased had a screw setup to raise and lower the platform with a 1/2" rachet. The surface was also tiltable. I think it was $60 at the time.

Tailcone is different, as later models did not have a speedo output drive. Just swap the two, along with the necessary gear inside, and you'll be fine.
