V-90 specific error code/Anyone know OBD II S90-V90

My 1999 V-70 is my first Volvo lemon having gone through it's second ETM and it's first ABS module and there is more beyond that $2000 right there. It's a great highway car though. According to the OBD II code reader that I bought at Wal-Mart, my check engine light is coming on constantly thanks to error code P1170. The "P" means power train, the first "1" means Volvo specific, the second "1" means fuel and air metering problem, and the last two digits are unknown. Does anyone know what this code means or where I can find what it means? Thanks for your help.

      Thank you dewfpo S90-V90

Thanks for looking that up. Unfortunately I listed the code with one digit off. It's 1171 and I can't find a list of codes anywhere on the web. I have a vague suspicion it's the air mass sensor but that is a $260 part. It's a Volvo specific code though so I will have to keep searching. Thanks

        Hi Volvony,

If it's a OBDII code P1171, then I suggest you unplug and clean your MAF sensor, wait till it is thoroughtly dry, then plug it back in. If it was indeed the MAF sensor, it may take a few days of driving for the code to clear itself.

(Make sure you use throttle body cleaner and not carb. cleaner. The instructions for cleaning the MAF should be in the FAQ's.)

I will clean the MAF though I don't know what it is. I can use the code reader to turn the "Check Engine" light off and I have done that. Sometimes it stays off for an hour or even a night and other times it comes back on as soon as I have shut it off. It's always this one code P1171 and a corresponding LED (red) on the tool indicates that this code requires action. The code system (the first two digits) says that this problem is in the air/fuel system. Thanks for your help

            Your welcome Volvony,

The Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor is located in the large intake tube from the air filter box to the throttle body. It has a very fine, DELICATE wire that should be cleaned very carefully. Follow the instructions in the FAQ. (Again, the wire is delicate and can break if not handled properly.)

            Good Luck,

            DEWFPO

Thanks very much for your help. This appears to be the problem. And to think that on another Volvo I have (1990 740) the OBD I reported a failing MAF (car top speed -20 MPH) and I just took it to a shop that replaced the unit for $500. Only later did I realize that nonne replaces these without trying to clean the burnt dust off that wire, this being in Phoenix AZ where dry conditions give rise to dusty winds. Thanks again. Info can be scarce at times
