How to use dielectric grease? 200 1987

I'm planning to use some dielectric grease on underhood ignition connections to try to solve some wet weather problems. FI fuse, spark plug wires, maybe AMM.

I'm confused how to use it though. Do you coat contacts and then connect them(ie do you want grease on the contact surfaces)or do you connect the connectors and then use grease to seal around the joints?

Thanks,

Alf
