I would second the motion on the fuel pressure regulator at this point. Too bad you can't check the pressure at the rail and see what it is. The regulator is easy enough to change and not too expensive. I'm betting the one you have is probably the original?

If you ever get your hands on a fuel rail connection while on a trip to a recycling yard you can make a fuel pressure gauge with the parts shown in this image.
