Car runs better with Fuel Pressure regulator disconnected. 200

I've been having trouble with idle/hesitation problems. I decided its probably the FPR so I disconnected and plugged both vacuum connections. The car idles perfect now and does not hesitate. I believe the diaphram in the FPR is leaking (fuel smell in the vacuum hose). Will I damage anything if I run it like this for a couple of days until I recieve my new one?

If everything is operating properly it will cause the fuel pressure to run about 7 psi higher than it would normally. In light of what you said about the leaking diaphragm it will probably be better if you run it with it disconnected that with it connected. Your biggest concern is going to be running it with a rich mixture which could damage the cat and or fuel contaminate the oil and cause it to break down. I do not see any of these things really being a concern with the minor amount of enrichment that you are running. In reality the mixture control circuit can and will probably compensate for it and it will be a non-issue. I say run it with it disconnected.

Forget it. I found a vacuum leak. It only leaks when the vent is open on the feet area. I guess the FPR being disconnected helped hide the vacuum leak symptom. Of well I gues now I will have a spare. I did check the vacuum pressure but I never tried it with the vents activated.

Thanks for all the help.

Glad you found the problem.

Can you clarify how changing the air vent to the floor in the cabin impacts the fuel pressure regulator?

Do you know the answer or just fishing to see if he knows what he found to actually make a difference?

IMO if any extra air entering the system behind the AMM will effect the amount of pull (on diaphragms everywhere) and calibration of everything else. All things need to beconsidered to ensure a controlled enviroment.

A properly operating 0-2 sensor will only correct for so much bad mixture Both the air leak or fuel problem was going on for a while until things got so far beyond perimeters set on the computer map. It is then, that the "owners light bulb" needed to come on!

We do not know what year this car is, so we do not know if he would have had a rich/lean code thrown up for a CEL.

So yes we are all glad, as he was chasing and hunting, like the rest of us!
