M-41 speedometer cables 444-544

Ok...I am about to install an M-41 into my 544 and looking into speedometer cables.... From what i remember there are two variations one being...two large ends and the other being a small and a large...Is this correct? What are the sizes? and what should my 544 being a '62 have?

thanks
abram

In addition to what JohnMc said, I have gotten around the problem of the wrong size upper fitting when I had the right length cable by making cuts into the flare that keeps the screw fitting on, squeezing it together so the fitting would come off, slipping my old, right size fitting on and expanding the flare again. A new cable is nicer, but I've managed ro recycle a couple of old ones that way and saved some money in the process.

Should (and that's the important word) have the small end at the speedo' With cars this old you never know what the PO has done I'd venture that many have had speedo changes in their lives, my 210 got a rebuilt speedo with the large end just after I got it.

You *should* have the small speedometer end. I *think* (but could be wrong) that the instrument clusters got the big fittings at the same time they got the larger warning lights. So if your instrument panel has the small chrome surrounded beady lights you should have an early small end, if you have the larger all plastic lights then you probably have the later large end. I got an early 122 w/od cable from www.gcp.se and it fit perfectly when I put the M41 in my '63 PV.

The best thing to check is the size of the threaded fitting on the trans compared to the threaded fitting on the instrument cluster. If the instrument cluster has a smaller fitting than the trans, there is no such cable for OD AFAIK.
A Volvo 122 cluster will work.
If I remember correctly, the clusters with white back lighting have the small fitting and those with green have the large. The change-over was sometime between '62 and '64.
Best,
Shayne.

Part number 668598, $62.32 on www.gcp.se. I think that is what I ordered for my PV when I put in the M41. Early 122 with M41.

Of course, if your donor M41 has one of the sometimes troublesome angle drives, you probably don't need a new cable. The longer length is made up for (more or less) by it not needing to make a right angle bend.
