rear bumper crunched in one side - pull out? 700 1987

Somebody bashed the left side of my 744's rear bumper, and it did its "5-mph shock absorbing thing" I guess. It's now shoved in 3 inches more than the right side. I read that it's "easy to pull out" so I tried with an engine hoist/come-along cable hoist with 2 hooks, using my 240 as an anchor. Nothing moved, under a lot of tension, afraid to go further. What is the resistance? Are these collapsible bumper thingies a small hydraulic shock absorber, or some other arrangement. Are they just one-time use, not re-settable? Anybody have another method?

Andy

Gas-charged hydraulic-damped, and once compressed beyond a certain point they vent that gas charge as I understand it. Grab a junkyard replacement and swap it. Just be really careful around the compressed one, on the slim chance it's still charged and decides to pop loose while you're working around it. Volvo advises drilling a hole through it near the yellow band marked on it with a rag wrapped around it, to discharge it, but I don't remember the specifics of it. I just unbolt them & put them in the trunk of whatever's headed to the crusher soonest.
