rear bumper crunched in one side - pull out? 700 1987

Somebody bashed the left side of my 744's rear bumper, and it did its "5-mph shock absorbing thing" I guess. It's now shoved in 3 inches more than the right side. I read that it's "easy to pull out" so I tried with an engine hoist/come-along cable hoist with 2 hooks, using my 240 as an anchor. Nothing moved, under a lot of tension, afraid to go further. What is the resistance? Are these collapsible bumper thingies a small hydraulic shock absorber, or some other arrangement. Are they just one-time use, not re-settable? Anybody have another method?

Andy
