tie rod replacement, or whole rack? 700 1990

Wheelworks said I needed new tie rods. Local Volvo shop said they were fine. Dealer said I needed new tie rods and they'd just replace the whole rack if they were doing it. What makes sense here?

I can feel the play in the front wheels when i jack up the front of the car, and my new front tires are beginning to have a scallop wear to them. I think the new rack is $400 ish, just the tie rods are $150 or so.

How hard is it to get the tie rods off of the rack? I'm not familiar with how they attach.

It is the correct procedure to replace the entire rack with inner ball joints(tie rods) if the inner ball joints are worn. A few reasons why you should do this, and not because Volvo wants to soak you more $ for everything.
So may bricksters want to 1/2 **s this job, when it is not only a good measure to replace the whold thing, since all the components wear at the same rate, it really is cost effective. How will you feel when you replace the inner ball joints after 200k miles of a original rack on the car, and 40-50k mi later you need to replace the rack anyway? Racks are not sold without new inner ball joints. You just wasted $150.
A re-conditioned rack is $238 from Swedish Engineering, complete with new inner ball joints.
This is especially true for the later rack with the inner ball joints that are fitted with ends without flats for putting on a spanner wrench. The ends are installled and torqued while the rack is held in a vise while off the car. This can't be done properly while the rack is in the car, and an older rack can be easilly damaged if the shaft isn't held securely while removing or replacing the ball socket to prevent any rotation of the shaft. If you have to remove it, you might as well replace it, and a complete rack R&R job takes 1/2 the time as the inner ball R&R.

Click here to learn more about tierods. The diagram shows the inner and outer connected.

Also additional information in the FAQ's about rack replacement with diagrams to help you identify the type of rack you have.

It is not rocket science a garage with half a brain should be able to tell you what components are in need of replacing. The dealer suggests replacing everything because that is the deepest plunge into your pocket.

Tie rod ends just screw on to the ends on the tie rods. You should be able to get a couple of these for <$50. The ball joint is sometimes hard to get out but other than that they're pretty easy to replace. Alignment needed afterwards.
