Differential filler plug won't tighten very tight. 200 1981

After checking the differential fluid, the filler plug doesn't want to tighten very tight. It feels like it just wants to keep on going until the plug falls into the differential pumpkin. I left it before I got that far, but I'm wondering if I should pull the plug out and peen the last couple of threads in two or three places around the circumference of the plug to give it some bite, or maybe just get a new plug. Has this happened to anyone else? The threads are not stripped on the plug or the differential.

Doug,

I had the same problem with my 86 345DL about ten years ago. I actually had the plug thread through and fall into the dif. After recovering the plug, Teflon tape wrapped around the threads has worked well without any leaks for the last 60k plus miles. I just tighten it to snug before it goes to far.

Could someone have used a straight thread tap to "clean up the threads"?

Teflon tape or paste, and only tighten til barely snug.

I'd try a pipe plug from the local home improvement store; it might be larger(the thread is tapered), but I'd use teflon tape, regardless.

Before peening any threads, how about a couple wraps of teflon tape to snug it up?
