Differential filler plug won't tighten very tight. 200 1981

After checking the differential fluid, the filler plug doesn't want to tighten very tight. It feels like it just wants to keep on going until the plug falls into the differential pumpkin. I left it before I got that far, but I'm wondering if I should pull the plug out and peen the last couple of threads in two or three places around the circumference of the plug to give it some bite, or maybe just get a new plug. Has this happened to anyone else? The threads are not stripped on the plug or the differential.
