Oh Nooooo!

I'm not sure if I'll get 'clearance' to visit Volvo for the $500 worth of re-built calipers. I purchased these ATE calipers on e-Bay (usually no problem) but this time I got stuck (shipping 2X costs more than the calipers). The e-Bay listing was Item number: 8030016869 with a description of

THE APPLICATION IS FOR: 1983-87 VOLVO 740 SERIES AND 760 SERIES WITH A 36 MM PISTON.

I've posted the photo in the brickboard gallery, but think I'm stuck here as these have a different bolt pattern and are quite different from what I see on mine. Mine are also quite 'past' a re-build. Were there really different rear caliper options for this model (other than piston size) or did I get sent a mislabelled part? (too expensive to send back to California likely in any event).

There are some hard lessons to be learned regarding shipping to Canada from the US. Personally, if the vendor won't ship via US Post, I won't buy-- the brokerage fees from courier companies are often unreasonably high.

Why not check your local yellow pages for a place that rebuilds calipers? I haven't had occasion to look here, but there was a place in London that had them for $65 apiece. Another alternative is rebuilt calipers from FCPgroton.com, or even your local boneyards ($20?). If the hydraulics are intact on the donor car you can even check them out to see if they are good. Don't pay $40 for the hardware at the dealer-- FCPgroton.com has it for $5.95.

The shipping was $33 US, so if everything checked out OK I would have had a re-man pair, with pads and springs/pins to my door for $87 US. Not bad really and better than a rebuild cost, AND I get potential donor parts.

Problem is they don't fit and I'm not sure why. So I'm out $100CDN.

My currrent calipers are past repair, so I may have to go the boneyard/rebuild approach...

Easy, cost-effective E-Bay fix, not so.

I'm in trouble now ;>}
