still stumped guys... turbo not running 200 1983

hey guys, i've been out for a while doing about everything i can figure out on this car to get it running and still no luck.. all the things i have done here may narrow it down a bit so i thought i'd see what your opinions would be.
I just replaced the timing belt and all lines up right,
new cap, rotor, plug wires, plugs
new vacuum lines throughout EXCEPT the warm up regulator was replaced before with a non-turbo part so the vacuum lines to the warm up sensor in the head are now blocked. this shouldnt affect starting though.
New connector hose and others inspected on turbo intake piping.
New in-tank and main fuel pumps
New air, fuel and oil filters
Cleaned out oil separator box and piping
Intake gasket replaced
Different coil used now, no difference.

I am getting a charcoaling of the spark plugs like the possibility of the spark not getting where it needs to or when it needs to....it is getting gas. The fuel pump relays seem to be clicking in and out as they should.... Ideas?? The car ran, but ran poorly a month ago and now no start. I can turn it over and over and over and every few turns it will act like it is trying to fire but kills itself immediately. I am out of ideas for now, Thanks for any input at all!!

Your problem sounds like control pressure, which is determined by the warm up regulator. This will most definately affect starting, especially if control pressure is too low making the engine flood. The symptoms you describe sounds like the engine is flooding due to too low control pressure. Work up a fuel test gauge (I did it with parts from Lowes) or get it tested. Believe me I have learned this the hard way. Control pressure is extremely crtical when starting a K-jet car like the 240 turbo. You may also want to drain your oil to check for gas as this is a strong possibility if you have cranked it a lot.

If the plugs are getting wet, then either you are lacking spark (see other post on checking spark), or not at right time, (see post on Distributor check ). You could also use a timing light to check while cranking. The 3 rd possibility is low or no compression. Unlikely perhaps but easy to check.
Is it really cold? (<30F). I air leak when cold can make starting almost iimpossible. (Mixture will be too far off).

hi there.
did the car run previously with the non turbo warm up regulator?
(it is getting gas) is it getting gas to the injectors? (The fuel pump relays seem to be clicking in and out as they should) there is one fuel pump relay with one coil, maybe test relay per bentleys.
you must confirm lambda relay is working! can you hear frequency valve buzzing while cranking?

clean/replace fuses 7 and 13.
i would first recheck any work recently done, maybe something got unhooked accidentially.
good luck

yes, the car did run previously... it hadnt been driven or run much for the past 5 years, but it started up but with very little power and it would choke itself out if you gave it any gas... i knew the in-tank pump was dead so i replaced it along with the cap and rotor and plugs and the thing ran pretty well for about a week, then the plugs got fouled again and it ran just like when i got it, now it won't start at all.
i'll do a compression check when it warms up again since it is about 30 degrees right now. i'll do more checking on things and keep everyone posted, Thanks again!

I am assuming you get strong spark? If you pull the coil wire off the dist cap and place the end near the body of the car, you get a strong regular white-blue spark when cranking?

IF so, how about fuel delivery? If you remove the line at the fuel filter and run it into a can, you get good pressure as you turn the car on and then when cranking? (Regular precautions apply about discharging gasoline, possibly under pressure! Be careful and of course, secure that spark plug wire first!!!!)

And you said new timing belt- you're sure the intermediate shaft mark is correct? I know it's tough to see- I use a mirror to make sure I'm looking at it right. With a turbo, its 5 times as tough, since there's less room and extra crap in the way. A quick seat of the pants check- there's a tick mark on the top of the dist body under the cap. With the other timing marks lined up, is the rotor pointing at this mark, roughly?

Good luck with it!
