ENV Differential Problem? 444-544 1953

The ENV rear end in the 1953 PV that I'm working on, seems to be free wheeling! After removing the brake drums today, when I rotate either axle shaft, the drive shaft does not rotate. This is my first experience with an ENV differential, but I seem to recall somebody warning me about similar problems, when the locking pin sheers. Has anyone experienced this symptom?

I did have to exert a lot of force to remove one of the drums. It appears that the PO did not install the axle key and when I had this towed 75 miles, the drum must have rotated, heating up and seizing the drum! Also, this car has not been driven for at least 20 years, but was stored inside and out of the elements.

Am I over reacting or should I tear the ENV apart?

    ENV Differential Problem? 444-544 1953

    Cam
I was looking at the one I took off my 1956 444KS today. Thinking about what to do with it. Perhaps a "hot" spare? Are you interested? It's out of the car and looking for a home. I'm in Buffalo NY... No too far away!!!

    ENV Differential Problem? 444-544 1953

The fact that the drum was very hard to remove isn't very out of the ordinary, they are quite often very hard to remove. Even without the key the drum was probably not spinning if the tapers were dry and the drum was well seated. As for the non turning drive shaft, you never mentioned if the opposite half shaft was rotating at the same time. Unless the other shaft is restrained, the drive shaft won't rotate, spinning one side will just cause the other side to spin in the opposite direction.

Can I call you Super Mario? You are absolutely correct regarding the load on the axles. I guess in my 37 years of experience, I've never noticed that. Also, since I now have a hoist and had the problem with one of the drums, I was afraid I'd damaged something. I was so curious that I just went out to my garage, put the drum back on (with my puller), held it while rotating the other axle - viola, the driveshaft turned!

Christopher, I will still take a rain cheque (I'm Canadian) on your ENV, until I confirm the differential is not damaged.

Here's a few pictures, especially the first one with the damage on the axle. The inside of the drum is similarly scored and without the key, who knows when this damage could have occurred? I understand the Swede who owned it had been working on it for 15 years prior to it being brought into Canada in 1992. Regardless of when the problem happened, it has been off the road for at least 30 years.

Thanks again Mario for your help and Christopher for the generous offer - yes, I'm within driving distance to Buffalo.

        ENV Differential Problem? 444-544 1953

Nice puller! That taper does look very messed up. You will definately need to do some work with a file before you can put a new key in there. Even though it does look really ugly, you can probably run with it as is, as long as everything seats OK. It doesn't look compromised enough to actually snap off (worst case scenario). It is a very strange pattern of damage, what does your drum look like? It does look like the drum might have been spinning at some point in the past but why would it only spall in the center portion of the taper like that? Being a cheapskate, I would probably clean it up with a file, ensure the geometry with the drum looked OK and put it back together with a new square stock key and ignore it. Who knows when that damage took place anyways, it might have been taken apart and put back together again a few times since the damage occured with many miles traveled on it as is.

It would be silly to replace just the drum or just the half shaft while the other is damaged. If you are planning on having it for a long time, you should just keep an eye out for a good used half shaft, and when your drum ever wears out replace both at the same time. It is amazing how cheap (or free) stuff can be when you don't need it right away.

Do you have the Volvo ENV manual? 444-544 1953

I picked up the official Volvo service/repair manual for the ENV differential when I bought a stack of Volvo books dealing with my car.

If you don't have this manual, let me know and I'll scan it for you.

Do you have the Volvo ENV manual? 444-544 1953

Thank you for offering this Steve. As Mario points out, maybe I'll be OK to clean up things, but depending on how many mile/kilometers I do put on this car, I'm expecting problems down the road, but then again the PV may outlast me!

I do have the complete Service Manual with Part 5 covering both the ENV and Spicer differentials. They refer to the ENV as Model I and there are 5 pages, plus a foldout diagram of the rear axle. BTW, nice flame job on those trim strips!

OK, good. You have the same manual. I have the Spicer 27 in my car, but it's [retty much shot after the 'mechanic' overhauled it. Apparently he didn't have the mnual, or decided he didn't need to use it. I know for certain he didn't know about gear lash!

Anyway, no real problem about that, as I intend to swap it out for something with longer legs so I can go faster thtn 55 mph!

Yeah, I noticed those strip flames in the graphics section at Pep Boys, then later I saw the same ones a Kragen for twice the price. I bought them just because I'm working with a discrete 'flame' theme on my car. I call it 'Hot Stuff' like the 'Tuff Little Devil' in Harvey comics. I bought a bobble-head of Hot Stuff, too, plus he's on my display card that I use at car shows.

I also use an 'adult' graphic of this, both on the rear window, my toolbox (it matches the car) and the display card:

It measures about 3 X 5 inches in the original plastic sticker, but I blew it up uge for my display card.

            Steve

ADDED: I just noticed the areas not filled with blue. This image was for my Volvo web page. Looks like I'd better get PhotoImpacrt out and fix that!

            S.

A rear axle from a late 80s 2wd S10 (10 bolt) has the same track width as a 544. Supposedly good for 300hp without mods, lots of gear ratio options and commonly available with limited slip.

I know about the S10 axle, but at this point I'm not up to pulling the Spicer out of the car and welding up the mounts for the S10. Maybe in the future, if I find a good deal on a ratio I like.

Here's another question someone may have an answer to:

I can get chromed covers for the Dana 27 differential, but I don't have one on hand to check and see if the Dana and Spicer 27's share the same cover.

I'd like to dress up underneath the car a little without sending stuff out to be chromed, so if anyone knows if I can use a Dana 27 cover, please let me know.

                Thanks!

                Steve

How to make the background transparent, or what to do on a rainy, cold Sunday 444-544 1953

Actually Steve that image is a .JPG image and the only way it will show up the way you want is if you change the color of the page's background to the same blue. I used PaintShop PRO to save the image with a transparent background as a .GIF image, setting the transparency code to the background image. The original file you posted had used "antialias", so the background was not a single, pure color code, hence the "noise", but you now get the idea, eh? Of course if this is a copyright image, my experient was only used to show you how to convert another similar image ;~)

The background was set to blue because that's indeed the color of the page. I use my transparent .GIF's for other applications. Thanks for the info, tho!
