Overdrive Solenoid Removal 200 1988

I'm having trouble removing the 12 mm bolts that hold the overdrive solenoid. Because it's a tight area, I bought a stubby 12 mm wrench. I couldn't generate enough torque to remove those tightly held bolts. Help!

get a torque wrench and put it at 150 nm and try it the harder the torque the easier the bolt should come out

I have used a short(aprox. 6") angled/bent 12mm open end wrench. Before I realized that you could buy such a wrench I actually took an existing one and bent it myself. I must say that getting off this solenoid is not very easy. I wish Volvo had located it otherwise. Hope this helps. Good Luck.

    Hi Myron,

Yesterday was my day for that job (on an '84 with 355K). I was way too lazy to drop the crossmember, and that is defining a new height in laziness.

Yet, I was stymied by my usual tactic of whacking a stubby with a small hammer. I just couldn't get enough swing room or lacked the motivation.

The bolts on mine are M8 with 12mm head and captive lockwashers. I was about to give up and haul out the impact wrench to buzz out the crossmember bolts, when I rummaged around a seldom used tool drawer to come up with this.

The third photo shows where you don't want any dirt to fall, so as it says in the FAQs, clean, clean, and clean some more. An afterthought was I should have followed up with compressed air delivered by a J-tube; there were so many little rocks lodged up behind that solenoid.

I used a 1/4" drive socket set to do it.

The Bentley Manual calls for 7-12 ft-lbs of torque to tighten the solenoid bolts. However, I would estimate that that I need 30 ft-lbs of torque to loosen those bolts on my Volvo. Yesterday, I went to a junkyard to practice with the stubby wrench I bought. I found a tranny removed from an engine and could not remove the bolts with the stubby wrench.

You may get a better angle on it just by lowering the transmission- support the trans and remove the 4 bolts (14mm I think) holding the rear crossmember onto the frame. Lower the trans slowly and see how access improves.

I thought they used 6mm socket head bolts but I could be wrong...

It's 12 mm. I bought a stubby wrench from Sears just to access the bolts. I also went to a junkyard and practiced on a tranny that someone else removed from a Volvo. Apparently, my Volvo is not the only one out there with stuck solenoid bolts. The junkyard solenoid was even worse; wouldn't budge. Part of the problem is the stubby wrench doesn't allow enough torque.

If you have ramps to get it up in the air, it helps, also try an offset round 12mm wrench and a rubber mallet. Make sure that you have the wrench seated all the way on the nut and give it a couple of whacks, worked for me. BTW my thanks to those who advised me to clean the tranny channels after I did the Roger Scott modification to my solenoid. Did the trick, 2200 Rpm@ 65MPH,Sweet!!!
