oil pan problems 700

recently we got an oil change, and the mechanic told us that our oil pan is deteriorating. i was wondering how much this part should cost, and how likely it is that it will fall off or break. the oil is not leaking now, i check daily. is this common, how much work/parts will we need?

    oil pan problems 700

    Hello:

I recently had the same problem with my '92 940-- the pan was rusting through from the outside. I didn't have the time to deal with it myself-- brought it to the local indy and he drained it, ground down the rusty spots, degreased it thoroughly, applied JB Weld followed by a smear of metal-impregnated silicone. So far, so good.

I had been quoted 3.5 hours of labor to replace the pan-- the shop had used pans, but they were still attached to parts cars which were buried in snow at the time. If a pan had been accessible, I probably would have gone with a replacement.

The pans are mild steel, so they are unlikely to suddenly spout a massive leak (unlike a crack in an aluminum pan)-- a tiny pinhole can produce what looks like a massive leak.

Good luck and let us know what you decide to do!

See the FAQ for pan replacement instructions: You will need to support the engine.

The pan used is $30 and I have a few of them. They do not fall off typically. I am guessing that it may have some rust and may get worse in the future. You will only need the pan, gasket and some time.
