Sometimes just by turning the input shaft you can tell a lot. Noise or feel that should not be there. Shift the gears and turn in each gear. Drain fluid, should only be dirty without metal bits or streaks of silvery stuff when you drain the OD.
Other than the above, I cannot help with the trans. The OD..listen for noise, hold the output especially in reverse. You should not be able to stop reverse from turning the output shaft.
Take the time with the OD before you install the tranny to change the following:
Actuating piston O-rings, since it is a lot easier to take the OD off the tranny outside the vehicle. Ten minutes vs a couple of hours.
Prior to taking the OD off, remove the solenoid so you can disassemble and clean the solenoid. You will need the weight of the tranny to break the torque.
Change the 4th gear switch on the tranny cover. Saves crawing under if it is vbad or fails shortly after all your work.
Those three are the most common failure modes of the OD. Refurbish the OD before install and you should be good for at least 150,000.
Watch your relay wiring and the relay itself. Not the same and will cause trouble. Grab the relay socket harness,(all hte way to the instrument cluster) shifter wires and under auto from the doner.
