HELP!! Broke a Sensor and Replacement is Wrong Type!!!! 900

I've been concerned that my injection system thinks it's too cold and has been ramping up the fuel mixture too much.

I ordered a replacement coolant temperature sensor along with a few other parts I've been needing (crank position sensor for instance). The parts arrived today and I switched out the CP sensor with little trouble. I used a 19mm crecent wrench on the coolant sensor to no avail. I struggled with it for some time before I managed to bust the plastic plug housing. After a bit more struggling, I opted to go ahead and break off the housing to get a socket of the damn stuck thing. This worked... sorta...

Upon removing the old sensor and opening the bag containing the new sensor, I noticed that while it looked very similar, it was NOT the right size, nor was the connector the bullet-type. This part was the REAR sensor injector sensor, not the front gauge sensor!

Oh Shi...!! I've destroyed the sensor and have no replacement....

Ironically, it's the injector sensor that I needed to replace, but I destroyed the gauge sensor. I should have read my mauals a bit more carefully. Hard lesson.

But, I did bother to hang on to the B230F head and sensors from my 1986 740. I found the matching front sensor, removed it, but quickly noticed that instead of the twin bullet connector, it only has a single spade connector. It won't connect

Shi....!!! The dealer is closed here until morning

So... here are my short-term options.

1) Do nothing. Deal with an inop gauge for a while until I can get a replacement.

2) Jury-rig something with the 740's sensor.
I can make a quick spade-to-bullet conversion and make a temporary ground wire for the other bullet. In theory this should work...?

2) Waint, don't risk a potential overheat, leave the 940 in the garage and hitch a ride over to the dealer in the AM to buy the correct part. Actually, I can drive the frankenstein p1800.

I'm not sure what the consequences of an inopperative gauge would be. I'm guessing that the 940 has twin connectors because it controlls the fully electric fan. The 740 had a mechanical clutch fan. and would not have needed it.

Anyone know how much the 19mm bullet connector Temp Sensor costs from the Dealer??

Just buy a new gauge sensor and install it after it comes. Unless your cooling system is on its last legs or you forget to check coolant levels, you should be fine.

Whew.. That's a relief 900

No, things are running rather well. I've just been untaking some preventing maintenance. my belts, water pump, thermostat, radiator, and expansion tanks are all new as of last summer. The CP sensor was starting to go bad, so that was the only critical concern. The temp sensor was a precaution.

So this sensor does nothing other than drive the gauge and my cooling fan is on a separate control entirely? I can deal with a flat temp gauge, but I do not want to risk an overheat. It sounds as if it is not a problem.

Also, I've been largely unable to locate the correct sensor at any of the usual online parts sources (I can only find the injector sensor). Is there something funky about this front sensor?

Temp Gauge Sender at FCP 900 1995

That's good to know. That is definitiely the sender that I busted.

I ordered one through autopartswarehouse for the same price, but it was kinda like roulete. The online "help" didn't know much. If it is not the correct part, I'll return it and order from FCP.

I believe the fan should be triggered by the temp sensor in the radiator.

No sensor in this radiator 900

HUmm. My radiator failed last march and I replaced it with a new nissens. There is not a radiator temp sender in this particular model, I had to plug it with the included kit.

I've been driving it around and so far had no overheats. Still, I do not like driving without being able to monitor my temp. I did add the loss of coolant sensor mod, so I'm covered if I start blowing coolant.
