The center mount should hold the shaft pretty firmly. There is a spring inside the rubber mount that helps support the shaft - if that spring is missing or not 'springy' that could cause a vibration problem (which I am assuming is your problem?).

How does the the mount look? If the rubber is wasted, I would replace it and the spring (and the bearing if you don't know the mileage on it).
