Borg-Warner Part Needed - BW Sources Out There? 120-130

I am in need of what is probably a totally obscure part for the Borg-Warner 35 Automatic Transmission in my 1966 122.

In particular, there is an approximately 8" long rod that connects the gear shifter linkage to the transmission itself. The rod has two round 1" holes on each end. Inside each of the holes is a hard rubber bushing, and those bushings hold the rod onto the shifter linkage and the transmission. My hard rubber bushings have deteriorated and fallen out. I've managed to shove the rod back on using plumbing gaskets and held it in place with baling wire, but it's not going to last another 40 years the way I've rigged it.

Knowing that BW35's were used in other American vehicles (I heard they were on Checker cabs, can't verify if that's true or not) I was wondering if anyone had located a source for BW parts, such as the hard rubber bushings I'm looking for. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Borg-Warner Part Needed - BW Sources Out There? 120-130

Hi Dennis. I had the same problem about 2 years ago with my 66 122. I placed a wanted add on the IPD website and got two responses. One was from Joe Lazenby of Susquehanna Spares in Pa. He had a complete good used rod w/bushings. The other was from a fellow in California who had just the bushings. It turns out the bushings are used on certain older Mercedes Benz models but he wouldn't tell me what the year/s or model or the application. He wanted to keep it a trade secret I guess. However they worked just fine and looked just like the originals. I'm sorry but I don't have his name available but I believe he ran a Volvo repair shop in Ca. Hope this helps.

Good ideas, all. Thanks for the input! I might try the nylon rod/ machining approach first, seems to be fail-safe.

    Thanks!

Have you looked to see if later model Volvo alternator mount bushing might be modified enough to work? Perhaps just cutting to length would do the trick.

They are cheap and readily available, for example:

It is a simple matter to machine new bushings out of nylon rod. I keep such stock on hand in order to make throttle linkage and trans linkage bushings when needed. Find a good small machine shop and show them the parts.

I'v been told by a very good Volvo parts guy that Datsun ran them way back in the day as well, I do not know if Toyota did or not. I had to get a pan for my '74 one time from the local Nissan dealer.
