FRont ABS sensors and sensor wheels 700 1989

Anyone know if it is possible to reduce the diameter of the front ABS sensor wheels (by removing rust with wire brush) to the point where they don't send a signal? I'm getting low speed pulsing of the pedal followed by the ABS lamp lighting after starting to drive. I've cleaned up the front ABS sensors once before which effected a cure for the same problem, but this time around it hasn't worked. Is there a design gap between the sensor wheel and the sensor pick-up that I could measure to determine if they are too far apart now?
Any advice gratefully received
Owen from Scotland
p.s. thanks to all for the great advice received in the past!

Had a similar problem with my 89 740 turbo wagon. Lite comming on after starting and some times pulsing.Turned out to be a bad power connection at the battery so be sure o look there too.
