Clean up the wiring terminals on the connectors located on the drivers side of the transmission. A dirty or corroded terminal on any of these wires can cause strange shifting and torque convertor lockups. Your symptoms sound exactly like the ones my old '93 960 had prior to cleaning these terminals.
