O2 sensor?

Hey everybody -

I am running out of things to try, so I was wondering if a bad O2 sensor could possibly cause these symptoms. Obviously my car is running rich, but could a bad O2 sensor cause it to bog down under power? I realize a rich mixture is not particularily what an engine would love running on but my car has absolutely no power above 4000 rpms. Just curious.

thanks in advance

brant

Do you have another thread started? Not sure what you have tried. Could be plugged cat? Soft turbo hose collapsing?

yes i realize that it is most likely a bad vaccum hose, i have replaced many but am going to try and pressurize the system. I was just wondering if a bad O2 sensor could even cause the bogging down or not.

        O2 sensor?

        Hello Brant:

I would first suspect a leak in the intercooler plumbing-- often they don't reveal themselves until they are under boost. Randy Starkie has a great post with a simple tool to test for air leaks.

A bad O2 sensor can cause some bogging, but it will be difficult to sort that out until the other issues have been dealt with. Rich running can be caused by intercooler plumbing leaks, a bad fuel pressure regulator, a bad coolant temp sensor or an O2 sensor. The difficulty is that when the car is running rich, the O2 sensor voltage will reflect it (unless it is dead). The test for an O2 sensor is to see it fluctuate in a timely manner between about 0.2-0.9 VDC with changes in 02 levels in the exhaust.

By the way, let us know what year your 740 is-- it may help to know whether it is LH2.2 or 2.4.

        Have you checked your codes?

        Good luck!

Thanks for the advice. My car is an 89'. I am in the process of replacing all my vaccum lines. Which brings up another question; Randy Starkie, was that the brake fluid cap and the valve stem? How do you attach the two?

          thanks

Get an old cap, drill a hole for the valve. Most valve packages show the "rim hole size" on the package. Best place to check turbo hoses is where the AMM connects in front of the turbo. Then some low pressure and listen for air leaks.
