Engine conversion, engines? 140-160

I have started looking for later turbo engines to transplant into my 74' 142, having decided it was more cost-effective to do so for the power I am seeking. I was considering the B5234Ft (850 turbo) or the B230Ft. I wonder if anyone has any knowledge of 140 5cylinder conversions and/or an opinion on the use of either in the car. I will likely use a ford tranny and rearend as I would like to bring the 5234ft (if I choose that) to its 400hp capacity. I am realy excited!

Besides turbobricks.com, there are a lot of "upgraded" Volvos in Europe using Volvo engines. I saw some on a thread a couple of years ago, truely awsome.
Look around before you start and get some more options.
Like a T6 engine in a 145! I think he used all of the driveline parts and shortened the driveshaft.

Ah, i did some measuring after I posted and the B5234Ft would not fit, not neatly. So B230Ft it is. Any info?

The info is out there, use google to find others who have done it. Harvey who posts here has done a very good looking B23 in to a 142, I didn't look too hard at how he did it because I'm not a fan of Volvo's SOHC engines. Basically, you need to decide what gearbox you are using, then it's just a matter of fabricating the engine & gearbox mounts, etc. I'd guess a T5 would be the box to use, the 240/740 manual boxes all have very poor ratios.

General wisdom is the later the better on the B230FTs. (not that the others are awful or anything) Look for a 940 Turbo if possible. The M47 5 speed is considered marginal at best with a stock turbo motor, only the M46 overdrive can stand up to it.

Yeah, the early B230's are very marginal in the conrod department, avoid using that bottom end. The late B230 rods are pretty good, they'd hold together better than B23 rods at high RPM, the B23 rods would likely handle more boost.

here is a link to a pic with a 5 banger in the 140 series.

It fits and looks about as clean as clean gets (in this install).

That 142 is top shelf. I'd guess that wouldn't be any heavier than a B20 either. I wonder how well it goes?
