No start, fuel code 2-2-3 900 1993

My 1993 940 with 140,000 miles will not start. Engine turns over fine but does not even "try" to start. Ran fine until yesterday. I checked engine control fault codes and get "2-2-3" for fuel (1-1-1 for ignition). This code suggests that the Idle Control Valve is bad. Is there anything I should do before replacing this (very expensive) item?

Thanks,
Henry Canipe

Don’t trust the codes. Most no start and stalling issued is the fuel pressure relay. I recommend resoldering the old relay. Better yet buy a new one. It may last 20 years or 3 months like one of mine.

Henry

you are leading me exactly

a week or 2 my car would not start 91' 740
it would not start, it turned out to be fuel pump relay
I just took it out and put it back in, since I have bought a new one
today the service engine light came on, I also got diagnosis problem as 2-2-3
but I have no symptoms

mode 2 and 3 just go crazy with blinking led too much too count

I just posted a question, what type of electronic system I have, before I jump into testing the IAC and so on

Liam

The service engine light comes on every 5 to 10k depending on the car, n/a or turbo. Has nothing to do with nothing - just reset it. Reset you OBD1, and recheck in a week or two. If your OBD codes are haywire, try disconnecting the battery for a few hours. That should also reset the codes.

Pulling Fuse 1 for a few seconds will clear the codes.

Dear Henry,

Good p.m. and hope this finds you well Yes. Clean the idle air control valve (IACV). See the 700/900 FAQs, under SITE FEATURES, for the cleaning procedure.

I'd add that you should keep the valve's nose (the end opposite the electrical connection point) pointed down, to keep solvent out of the motor compartment.

Use carb cleaner. You can use cotton-tipped swabs, if you're careful to flush out any remaining fibers. The end of the valve, where the hoses attach, should be nice and clean.

Removing the IACV is not hard. You need a 7mm socket (to loosen the hose clamps). The valve usually slides out of its rubber mounting. If it won't slide out, then two hex bolts need to be removed.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

spook
