Why not drop the AW70 pan? 200

Hi everybody. I have a 93 240 with an AW70. The tranny works well except for the standard 1-2 shift bump. I plan to do a cooling return line flush soon and have a couple questions.

1. Should I drive around for a couple miles with a cleaner in the oil like Sea Foam, etc., before doing the flush?

2. What's the best type/brand of Dexron III to use?

3. Why do people (and now I guess Volvo) recommend NOT dropping the pan and changing the screen? I would think at least just dropping the pan, cleaning it and the magnet would just get more dirt out of the unit.

4. Has anybody had any success with adding a seal softener or any other tranny fluid additive to make the unit operate smoother?

Thank you all,

Mark

I took mine off. The tranny had almost 300K (kilometers).

You must make sure you work with clean hands/tools.

My filter (original) was almost perfect. I put on a new one from the kit anyway.

The magnet has a bit of particles to it, I took it off and cleaned everything up. Make sure to put the magnet in the same place o nthe pan.

All in all there really was no need for me to remove it, buit it was worthwile, I cleaned the magnet, assuerd a clean filter, and got a fresh gasket for the pan.

Of course yu should still flush from the lines, otherwise you;ll miss a large amount of fluid.

Be safe, stands, good jacks, and a car on a flat surface. Not worth the risk, never.

I did a fluid and filter change on the last 1990 I bought. IMHO the filter was starting to get clogged and I'm glad I did it. It probably never had a fluid change and was definetely due for a filter. In comparison my 1990 that I purchased new and did numerous fluid changes on never had a filter that had any noticable clogging and I always felt like I was changing it for nothing. Spray that filler tube with PB blaster for awhile first as to much pressure can cause it to snap.

I would just drain it after its warm from driving and use Castrol.

One reason for those not working under a lift - the filler tube can be a bear to loosen. Other reason is nothing normal is retained by the screen so a flush does the majority of the cleaning. But you already have a screen and gasket, so you want to do it anyway.

FWIW, these trannies are very long-lived.

My first one went to about 400K miles with only fluid changes and a replacement of the tailhousing (rear) bushing and seal. Tranny was still working at that point; youthful drivers killed off the body and steering/suspension components.

I wouldn't open it up unless
      A) fluid change and tailhousing bushing doesn't straighten things up
      AND ALSO
      B) you can keep the working area clean so you don't get new gunk and gak in there that doesn't belong.

The dipstick tube on mine is stripped or stuck, it's tough to get off, plus the drain plug is also stripped. So now I just stick a plastic hose down the dipstick tube and use a small drill pump to suck most of it out, refill, drive and repeat, done.

          Well that's better than nothing.

But have a look in the 700/900 FAQ re. changing fluid via the cooling line at radiator. You need to cycle about 14-16-18 qt. fluid through there to clean out the old and have a high enough percentage of new fluid.

Most guys would prolly say I'm nuts to think anyone would go as far as 18 qt. But it sure wouldn't hurt. And 2-3 qt x 2 definitely is going to leave a lot of old fluid in your tranny.
