Blue smoke - but only some of the time ..... 900 1992

Hello,

I own a 180,000 mile 940SET Estate and I suspect that I have a problem with the Turbocharger.

I can see the 'blue smoke' evidence at the rear of the car when it is moving up or down a sloping road - and, generally, oly when the car is moving slowly, whilst stopping and starting in traffic.

When the car is running at speed there is no evidence of 'blue smoke' at all.

The turbocharger is made by Mitsubishi and, so far as I can tell, has never been serviced or removed from the vehicle.

Can anyone offer me any advice, please ?

By the way, I have access to a used, lower mileage than mine, turbo from a matching vehicle wreck.

Blue smoke - but only some of the time ..... 900 1992

I've had a similar problem for ages on a 740T with a 200FT. All the tubo people are baffled as it only burns oil at idle, when warm. It went away once after a throttle body cleaning so i think its to do with a vac hose/slight blockage etc or similar. I plan to replace the vac hoses and then see.

Cheers
Ian

Thanks Ian,

Another hint for the clue sheet !!

Not being a techie - I could use a little more explanation than you gave. Can you spare a few moments ? For example, where's the 'throttle body' that you refer to ?

I do have a Haynes Service Manual for the 940 (H to N registration) but it doesn't refer to a throttle body.

Thank you again,

Barrie

Blue smoke - but only some of the time ..... 900 1992

Hello again,

I guess I should add that I've discussed other possible causes of 'blue smoke' with my local garage mechanics.

We've considered stiffened valve stem guides, split gaskets, loose connections, piston rings and so on - but we do not seem to be losing enough oil for these possibles.

Overall we sense the turbocharger is the key to the matter - but we're really intrigued by the 'the blue smoke only appears when the car is stopping / starting on a slope' clue.

Does anyone have any ideas ... please ?
