A/C Doesn't kick in, where to start diagnosis? 200 1993

My nice thick Bentley manual for the 240 has apparently become politically correct as all it has to say about the A/C system is that one should see a professional.

I would like to do as much of the diagnosis of the non-working A/C on our 1993 240 myself as possible. I'm a very experienced DIY mechanic and I do have a simple A/C pressure gauge, DVM, etc.

So far I have fixed the problem of the blue indicator light not coming on, by replacing the bulb :(. Now the blue light comes on when I engage the A/C switch, but the compressor clutch does not kick in. The diagrams say fuse 8 drives the A/C circuit and fuse 8 is fine. The other things on fuse 8 also work. It seems to me that there must be other protection in the circuit somewhere.

Perhaps someone can point me to a good how-to diagnostics write-up on the 'net somewhere???? Please :) .

TIA for any help!
John

A/C Doesn't kick in, where to start diagnosis? 200 1993

Today I hooked up the pressure gauge and found that the pressure with the compressor not running is around 40 PSI. As I let the car run it would after a time kick in the compressor for short periods of time, like 1-10 seconds, then kick back off. It would repeat this sequence indefinately.

The pressure dropped to the 15-20 PSI range for the short time when the compressor was running, then kicked back up when the compressor shut down.

Does this tend to indicate low freon levels or is it probably something else? Is there a circuit breaker in the system I should be checking?

    Thanks!

    A/C DIY Tools 200 1993

According to a friend, for a 134a system, the only special tools you REALLY need are a set of guages and a vacuum pump, which can be made from an old refrigerator compressor, some fittings, and some solder.

      A/C DIY Tools 200 1993

Thanks. I will start by checking the pressure as I do have a small DIY type A/C pressure gauge. I also have a vac. pump I've been planning to use for veneering, woodworking being another hobby.

I guess the other thing I might need is a black-light to look for leaks with dye in the system. Hmmm, a good reason for new toys .... er, tools!

    Hello,

Try jumping the receiver/dryer connections for 2-3 seconds. They are on the passenger side tucked in beside the radiator. From my experience if the compressor kicks in, then you have a lack of refrigerant i.e. it's leaking somewhere and you need a shop to leak test it, replace components and then charge it up. If not, then the compressor has likely bitten the dust and needs replacing, but there still might be a charge in the system. You still need to go see a qualified shop.

It sounds sanctimonious but Bentley, Haynes and others have always refered A/C repairs to qualified shops. I'd do the work myself, but I've got better things to do than spend $6000 on equipment that I will use once every 5 years.

In the later models the receiver drier is replaced by an accumulator which is on the passenger side firewall (it's the big silver can with pipes coming out of it). Try jumping the wires on the pressure switch that is screwed into the accumulator. If the compressor clicks on, it usually means that the refrigerant is low. If it doesn't you can try checking the wiring and relays. Good Luck
