wiring, poor fuel economy, black smoke 200 1984

Here's my current quandary. My 240's throwing black smoke, and for a few days was making a strange whoosh-whoosh sound whenever I acceleraed. Now it's running in all ways normally - holds idle well, accelerates fine, etc - except for two things: it's still tossing loads of black smoke and the main fuel pump is loud as the dickens.

Here's my conjecture. It's not the AMM because the car wouldn't run normally. Ditto for the computer. Timing belt hasn't been touched. My wiring's the old self-destructing type and a good bit is bare - should I assume a short in the coolant temp sensor wire? Is there a way to test that, short of running new wires?

Thanks!

Alex

Hi,
If the main pump have a loud noise, maybe is the prepump problem (in the tank). Start the engine, and hear close to the fuel cap if the in-tank pump works.

Good luck,

Edwin

Also look for a split in the vacuum hose to the fuel pressure regulator. A loss of vacuum to the regulator will set a high fuel pressure on the fuel rail and the car will run very rich.

I've had a stuck fuel pressure regulator before that would account for the straining main pump and the black smoke.

Measure the resistance at the ECU connector between pin 2 and ground. Compare it to the book chart. Trev might be thinking you are talking about gauge wiring, I guess, because that is the only one you would find at the gray plug.

Why are you scared of running a wire? Just cut the wire near the gray plug, splice in a new one and run it directly to the sensor.
