wiring, poor fuel economy, black smoke 200 1984

Here's my current quandary. My 240's throwing black smoke, and for a few days was making a strange whoosh-whoosh sound whenever I acceleraed. Now it's running in all ways normally - holds idle well, accelerates fine, etc - except for two things: it's still tossing loads of black smoke and the main fuel pump is loud as the dickens.

Here's my conjecture. It's not the AMM because the car wouldn't run normally. Ditto for the computer. Timing belt hasn't been touched. My wiring's the old self-destructing type and a good bit is bare - should I assume a short in the coolant temp sensor wire? Is there a way to test that, short of running new wires?

Thanks!

Alex
