For a trivial question:

how to change a 1980 side view mirror? It seems that there is now way to open the plastic which holds the mirror in place.

Thank you for your advise. I already did it!!! This is how:

first I released the mirror screw.

then I took the whole mirror and put it in a hot tub. This allowed me to pry the plastic from the mirror casing with relative ease.

Then I put the new one in with some silicon glue.

Here's a fuzzy answer. Several years ago I replaced the glass mirror in an '88 240. There was a small slot on the bottom of the mirror frame. I had to put a small screwdriver into that slot and then pry a plastic 'latch' either toward the door or away, I can't recall. This released the glass mirror. Replacement was the reverse.

This is hard to describe but I got the info from this site. You might try a search. I went to a pick-and-pull yard, found a 240 with a broken mirror, and practiced removing the mirror. Then I found a 240 with a good mirror and took that out for my car.

I'm sorry I can't be more clear but it was many years ago and I have about a 15 minute retention span.

Look on the inside of the door where the manual remote handle is located-in the center of the control handle-will be a screw that holds the handle in place-remove the handle and the plastic triangular trim pc--behind the trim pc-will be more retaining screws there as well.

lol, my brick has a cracked side mirror, so when i went to the junker i just tried to pry out the glass on one. Ended up cracking the beejesus out of it, and i repeated that about 10x, never got one out. So today my mirror is still cracked :D Now i know what to do
